Ukraine’s 44th Artillery Brigade has received an upgraded version of the self-propelled howitzer Bohdana, now equipped with a redesigned armored cabin.

This upgrade was showcased in a video by ArmiyaTV, the Ukrainian military broadcaster. The Bohdana, a domestically produced system, has undergone several iterations and is praised for its accuracy and mobility, although the loading process is hindered by the height of the recoil, requiring manual loading while the gunner aims.

Although a semi-automatic loading system is installed, it is not used due to technical limitations, such as the inability to load and aim simultaneously. In manual mode, troops can fire one round per minute, but in automatic mode, the rate slows to one round every two minutes.

The brigade began receiving 155 mm Bohdana howitzers in November 2024, expanding its artillery capabilities.

The Bohdana, officially designated as 2S22, entered serial production in early 2023, with costs ranging from USD 2.5 million to USD 3.1 million per unit. Production is distributed among several facilities, including some outside Ukraine, to reduce the risk of attacks. Recent improvements include the addition of a ballistic radar, which significantly increased accuracy, and monthly production has already reached 36 units.
